Retroactive student finance

If your study, residence, and work situation qualified earlier in the current academic year, DUO may still award student finance for those past months. We reconstruct the timeline month by month and identify periods that may still sit inside an official application window.

What the official window actually is
The standard rule
DUO allows student finance for past months back to the start of the current academic year: 1 August for MBO and 1 September for HBO or university.
A narrower exception
If an EU/EEA/Swiss/UK student was denied but later obtains evidence that they worked enough, DUO says they may reapply for the previous school year by email before 1 April of the following calendar year.
